Mansion House pub tries to push back opening hours just weeks after licence compromise

Most residents were pleased to hear that the Mansion House pub is being brought back into use, but were unimpressed by the owners' attempt to sneak through a licence allowing them to open till 4am every morning.

After many residents objected, at a Licensing meeting on 17 July the Committee agreed a sensible compromise, allowing the pub to be open till 12:30am every day, and 1:30am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Now the owners have returned to the Licensing Committee with a new application attempting to push back the opening time by another half hour every morning.

The full application for a variation is as follows:

To remove the condition imposed by the licensing sub committee restricting use of the outside frontage to a terminal hour of 22:00.

Late Night Refreshment
1. To add 30 minutes consumption time at the end of each trading session.
2. To submit a new plan to allow the use of the area now marked in red on the plan to the front of the premises as a consumption area for alcohol and food between 07:00 and Midnight all week. This is to correct an omission on the pavement licence granted until midnight every day.

Supply of Alcohol

Opening Hours

Proposed Hours:
Monday 07:00 - 01:00
Tuesday 07:00 - 01:00
Wednesday 07:00 - 01:00
Thursday 07:00 - 02:00
Friday 07:00 - 02:00
Saturday 07:00 - 02:00

Help Lambeth set its Housing Standard

Lambeth Council and its management agent Lambeth Living are working with residents to set a new standard to which all council homes can be developed and maintained.

The Government is providing Lambeth with some money to invest in our homes over the coming years, though it is not nearly enough for all that we would like to do. Because of this, choices need to be made about what work residents want to prioritise.

If you are a Lambeth tenant or leaseholder please fill in the online survey.

You can also attend a meeting this Thursday at 7pm at Pedlars Acre Hall, Opal Street/ Kennington Lane.

Already, Lambeth Housing have received around 5000 responses from residents - some of the bags of mail received are pictured. We want to ensure everybody has their say.

Prince's councillors have already made the case for the following works:

- new windows for the blocks on the Cottington Close Estate which are still outstanding

- new windows for the blocks on the Vauxhall Gardens Estate which are still outstanding (Aveline Street, Brangton Road)

- new windows for Denby Court

- investment in street properties which is required

- security doors for Cottington Close and Broadgates Court

- new intercom and lifts for Cotton Gardens

- new lifts for various blocks on the Vauxhall Gardens Estate

- new kitchens and bathrooms, with those in the worst condition being prioritised

> Please let us know if there are other priorities you would like us to campaign for!

National Grid Gas Works – Kennington Lane

TfL is writing to make you aware of the upcoming planned works by National Grid Gas (NGG) on Kennington Lane to renew 57m of gas mains.

This work will be completed in two phases, with each phase lasting for up to 10 days. In agreement with the London Borough of Lambeth’s Environmental Team, NGG will be working the extended working hours of 08:00 – 19:00 Monday to Friday and some weekends as deemed necessary. The following traffic management will be put in place for each phase:

Phase one
· Starting Friday 25 February 2011 until Sunday 6 March 2011
· Kennington Lane opposite the junction of Opal Street
· Two way temporary traffic signals
· Bus stop suspensions

Phase two
· Starting Saturday 9 April 2011 until Tuesday 19 April 2011
· Kennington Lane opposite the junction of Cottington Street
· Two way temporary traffic signals
· Parking and loading bay suspensions
· Bus stop suspensions

To minimise disruption to vehicular traffic, the temporary signals will be manually controlled between 07:00 – 10:00 and 16:00 – 19:00 Monday to Friday, and during working hours at weekends.

Whilst we appreciate that a certain level of disruption is inevitable, TfL has worked closely with NGG and the London Borough of Lambeth in order to reduce the impact of these works on road users and local people and businesses as far as possible.

I apologise in advance for any inconvenience that may be caused as a result of these essential works. Should you require further information or an update during the delivery of these works please contact our Streets Customer Services department on 0845 305 1234 or via the web at www.tfl.gov.uk/contact.

About Prince's Ward

View Prince's ward in a larger map

Prince’s ward is an area in the London Borough of Lambeth, taking in parts of Kennington, Vauxhall and the historic centre of Lambeth. The ward covers the northern part of Kennington, from Brook Drive down to Kennington Park Road; the part of Vauxhall north of Kennington Lane; and the Ethelred Estate, south of Lambeth Road. The river Thames is the western boundary of the ward. Kennington Cross (pictured) is closest to the centre point for the ward, Vauxhall and Kennington tube stations both lie on Prince’s ward’s boundary. Click here for a map of the ward.
Prince's ward is roughly coterminous with the SE11 postcode, but not completely. The area along the riverbank has an SE1 postcode, but is part of Prince's ward. The area south of Kennington Lane and west of Kennington Road is part of SE11, but not part of Prince's ward. The China Walk Estate is part of SE11 but is outside Prince's ward. A few streets around Elephant & Castle have an SE11 postcode, but are in the Borough of Southwark.

The biggest housing estates are the Vauxhall Gardens Estate, the Ethelred Estate, the Black Prince Estate, and the Cottington Close, Penwith Manor, Kennings and Cotton Gardens estates. The parks in the ward include Spring Gardens, Lambeth Walk Doorstep Green, Pedlars’ Acre Park, Lambeth High Street Recreation Ground, and Pedlars Park on Vauxhall Walk. There are two schools- Archbishop Sumner and Vauxhall Primary. The Durning Library at Kennington Cross serves the community.

Kennington Cross is the main concentration of shops and restaurants in the area. There is a Tesco supermarket on Kennington Lane, and other clusters of shops at Vauxhall Cross, Jonathan Street (where Lambeth Walk post office is), Lambeth Walk, and Wincott Parade on Kennington Road.

The census shows that population on Prince’s ward in 2001 was 11 636. Today this is likely to be considerably higher as many new developments have taken place since then. Prince’s ward had a slightly older population than the average in Lambeth. Its population is 62% white and 29% black. 32% of the population was born outside the UK. 83% of homes in Prince’s ward are flats. 37% of homes are owner-occupied; 29% are rented from the Council, 13% from social landlords, and 20% from private landlords. 68% of people in Prince’s ward are ‘economically active’, which is low by national standards.

History

Lambeth was originally a riverside village that was the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The village gave its name to the parish that stretched down to Brixton, which was the forerunner of the modern Borough of Lambeth. The area alongside the river housed wharves and manufacturing enterprises like the Royal Doulton potteries. In the nineteenth century the riverside was transformed into the Albert Embankment, and in the 1930s Lambeth Bridge connected Lambeth to Westminster directly.

Vauxhall became famous in the eighteenth century as a pleasure garden – a park that people from all over London visited to promenade and be entertained.

Kennington has a close association with the Prince of Wales and the Duchy of Cornwall – it was the site of the palace of the Black Prince in the Middle Ages, and the Duchy of Cornwall still own much land in the ward to this day. The name Prince’s ward comes from this association.
