Formal consultation on Vauxhall and Wyvil Primary school federation

Since 2009 Vauxhall Primary School has been working together with Wyvil Primary School in a 'soft federation' - enabling Vauxhall to benefit from Wyvil's strong leadership and make big improvements. Vauxhall was most recently inspected by Ofsted as being 'good' with 'outstanding capacity to improve'.

The governing bodies of both schools are now proposing that the federation be formalised, with the schools sharing a governing body but preserving their unique characters.

Parents should have received a consultation document about the proposal. If oresidents have comments or would like more information please email Peter Compton from Lambeth Council and he can help. The consultation closes on 16 November.

Kennington parents meeting on primary schools

Kennington parents held a passionate and helpful meeting last night in St Anselm's Church on the subject of primary school places.

Parents were concerned that two local schools, Henry Fawcett (pictured) and Vauxhall, had recently been through special measures, and that Archbishop Sumner's is oversubscribed.

In attendance were headteachers from Henry Fawcett and Archibishop Sumner's; Cllr Pete Robbins, Cabinet Member for Children & Young People; Kate Hoey MP; Cathy Twist, Lambeth Council's Assistant Director for Standards; and Mark Harrison, Councillor for Prince's ward and Chair of Lambeth's CYPS Scrutiny Committee.

An important point made at the meeting is that the Council intervened decisively at both Henry Fawcett and Vauxhall, and both schools are now out of special measures and are showing excellent improvements. The Associate Headteacher of Henry Fawcett invited parents to visit the school to see the improvements for themeselves and speak to her and the staff.

There was a strong feeling that Archbishop Sumner's should be expanded. Pete Robbins promised that this would be considered, and expansion onto the site of the Olive School on Oakden Street has not been ruled out. However, the extreme pressure on primary places in the south of the borough means that money for expansion of primary schools has to be focused there over the coming year.

Finally there was a discussion about admissions policy. Lambeth can only follow guidelines on admissions that are set nationally. Parents express a preference, and can't always be guaranteed a school of their choice. An important change this year is that primary admissions will be changed to a London-wide system, so parents can apply for primary schools in other boroughs and are not restricted to one borough.

Vauxhall Children's Centre officially open!

This afternoon Mayor of Lambeth Christopher Wellbelove and Kate Hoey MP officially opened the Vauxhall Children's Centre at Vauxhall Primary School.

It was a fantastic afternoon, with singing from Year Five pupils, music, cake and celebration.

The Centre has actually been up and running since 2008, providing a wealth of services to pre-school children, and crucially their parents and families.

The Centre is the 30th to open in Lambeth, and is one of more than 3000 centres opened since the Labour government came to power. The Tories have indicated they will slash the service and means-test SureStart so only the poorest will benefit from its services.

In her speech at the opening ceremony Kate Hoey said 'this government will go down in history for setting up children's centres'.

If you support SureStart Children's Centres you can join the 'Shout out for a SureStart campaign'.

Vauxhall community fair

Saturday 12 July saw the All Nations Church at Vauxhall stage their annual summer fair, in the playground of Vauxhall Primary School.

Vauxhall Labour party held a stall, and spoke to many residents about their concerns and priorities for the area.

Despite the windy weather, the fair was a great success, and the All Nations Church can be congratulated for putting on an excellent event.

The next community event that Labour in SE11 are planning to attend will be the Ethelred community fun day, on Lambeth Walk Doorstep Green, on Saturday 30 July, between 1pm and 5pm. See you there!
